While it may sound straightforward and standard, a breast augmentation comes in all shapes, sizes, and variations. Each and every patient has different anatomy and different goals. Some patients want a noticeable change while others want a more subtle, natural look. Whatever your goal may be, Dr. Rodriguez will create a customized plan for your breast augmentation to help feel more confident and proportionate.

What is a Breast Augmentation?

A breast augmentation is a surgery that increases the size of the breast(s) using an implant. Breast implants come in two different forms:

Saline

Saline implants have a soft silicone shell that is filled with a sterile saltwater solution (saline) during surgery. They are typically less expensive than silicone implants. The downside to a saline implant is that it is more likely to have visible rippling and feels less natural than silicone.

If the implant breaks or ruptures, the saline will leak out of the shell and be absorbed by your body. However, saline is the same solution given to you through an IV for hydration or medication, so it is absorbed safely with no harm done.

Silicone

Silicone implants have a soft silicone shell that is also filled with silicone. These implants feel softer and more natural compared to saline. “Gummy bear” is the non-scientific term for a particular type of silicone implant that is highly cohesive or “form-stable.” This means the silicone gel “sticks together” and holds its shape quite well, even if the implant shell is broken. These implants ripple less and are a bit more firm than traditional silicone implants.

How is a Breast Augmentation Performed?

Breast augmentation surgery is done under general anesthesia. An incision is made so that the implant can be inserted. Dr. Rodriguez typically places the incision at the crease under the breast, called the inframammary fold (IMF). This incision allows her to adequately see your internal breast anatomy during surgery and reduces the risk of the implant being contaminated by bacteria. Other incision locations would be in the:

  • Armpit (trans-axillary)
  • Areola (periareolar)
  • Belly button (trans-umbilical)

The implant is placed under the breast tissue, either above or below the chest muscle (pectoralis). Based on your goals for surgery and your lifestyle, Dr. Rodriguez will advise you on which location would be best for your breast implant.

To reduce the risk of capsular contracture, Dr. Rodriguez uses a Keller Funnel® to place the breast implant. This soft device, shaped like a funnel, allows the implant to be inserted with minimal manipulation and helps to avoid contact with your skin and the bacteria that are naturally present on it.

The incision is closed with dissolvable stitches, and a wrap is placed around your chest. In most cases, you can go home the same day as your surgery.

Breast augmentation is frequently combined with other breast procedures. Adding fat grafting to the upper part of the breast and cleavage lines is a great option to enhance the overall look of breast augmentation. As part of a mommy makeover, breast augmentation can often be combined with a breast lift, abdominoplasty, and/or liposuction.

Am I a Good Candidate For Breast Augmentation?

You may be a candidate for a breast augmentation by Dr. Rodriguez if you are a woman in the Houston area and you:

  • RBelieve your breasts are too small for your body
  • RFeel your breasts are disproportionate to each other
  • RDesire more cleavage
  • RHave realistic expectations
  • RAre a non-smoker and do not use any nicotine
  • RHave good control over any current health conditions

Breast Augmentation Recovery

A breast augmentation surgery takes one to two hours in most cases. You will have a wrap dressing placed around your chest during surgery and will switch to a supportive, soft sports bra at your first follow-up appointment. You should not wear an underwire bra until cleared by Dr. Rodriguez. Most patients can return to work by two weeks after surgery and can start exercising again six weeks after the procedure.

Breast Augmentation Results

Right after surgery, the breast implants will sit higher up on the chest since the tissues are tight and not accustomed to the increase in volume. Over time, they will settle as the tissues relax.

Scar therapy is recommended to optimize the appearance of the scar under the breast. Typically, it fades nicely and is relatively hidden in the crease.

Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Augmentation

How much does breast augmentation cost?

The price of a breast augmentation procedure varies depending on the patient’s exact goals and aesthetic objectives. In general, the cost of your potential breast augmentation surgery will depend on the type of implants you’re getting, their size and shape, anesthesia fees, and other patient-specific factors.

How should I prepare for the surgery?

Dr. Rodriguez will give you critical pre-operative instructions to make sure you have a successful procedure, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Stop smoking at least six weeks prior.
  • Avoid ibuprofen and aspirin starting 10-14 days before surgery.
  • Take a break from alcoholic beverages in the week leading up to your procedure.
  • Ask a close friend or family member to drive you home as you recover from the effects of anesthesia and stay with you to help during recovery.
How do I choose the right implant size and type?

During your consultation, you’ll try out different implant sizers to find the best fit for your unique needs and preferences. Working with Dr. Rodriguez, we’ll also consider your options within the overall context of your body type, lifestyle, and cosmetic goals.

Will getting implants affect my ability to breastfeed?

Breast implants typically do not affect your breastfeeding ability, as most augmentation procedures preserve the milk ducts and nerves involved in breastfeeding. However, certain incision sites, such as those around the areola, may increase the risk of complications. If you plan on having more children, please bring this to Dr. Rodriguez’s attention at your initial consultation.

How long do implants last?

Breast implants usually last 10 to 20 years with successful surgery and proper aftercare. While some follow-up surgeries might be necessary over a lifetime, most women experience durable, long-lasting results.
