Heavy and large breasts can be uncomfortable and cause issues like neck pain, back pain, skin rashes under the breasts, bra strap grooving, and skin irritation under the breasts. Large breasts can limit your bra and clothing options and make it difficult to exercise comfortably.
Some women have had large breasts since they were a teenager, and some women develop large breasts after pregnancy. As a result, Dr. Rodriguez sees women of all ages for breast reduction consultations. It is never too late to consider breast reduction surgery if your larger breasts bother you.
Breast reduction surgery, in the vast majority of cases, helps alleviate the discomfort associated with large breasts and helps create a breast size that is more proportionate to your body frame.
What is aBreast Reduction?
A breast reduction is a surgery that makes the breast smaller by removing extra breast tissue and skin. Almost every breast reduction is also a breast lift (mastopexy), meaning that the breast and nipple are lifted up higher on the chest so that they are not resting on your upper abdomen. Instead, they are put into a more youthful position and the areola size is reduced to match the new, smaller size of the breast.
How is a Breast Reductionperformed?
A breast reduction is a breast surgery done under general anesthesia and it is an outpatient procedure, meaning you will go home the same day.
In order for the breast size to be reduced and the position of the breast to be lifted, incisions are made on the breast in one of the following ways:
Vertical pattern
This breast reduction technique involves a scar around the edge of the areola and from the lower part of the areola down to the crease under the breast. This is commonly referred to as a “lollipop” incision and is very frequently used by Dr. Rodriguez.
Wise pattern
This type of breast reduction leaves the same scar as a vertical reduction but with the addition of a scar in the crease under the breast. This is also commonly called an “anchor” scar.
Through these incisions, extra breast tissue is strategically removed. The amount of breast tissue that is removed depends on your goals and preferences for your bra size after surgery.
Throughout the surgery, the nipple stays attached to breast tissue underneath it and both the nipple and breast tissue are lifted up higher onto the chest. All the incisions are closed with dissolvable stitches and a wrap is placed around your chest.

This surgery takes 3-4 hours in most cases and is an outpatient surgery. You will have a wrap dressing placed around your chest during surgery and will switch to a supportive, soft sports bra at your first follow-up appointment. You should not wear an underwire bra until cleared by Dr. Rodriguez. Most patients can return to work by 2 weeks after surgery and can start exercising again 6 weeks after surgery.
breast reductionresults
In the vast majority of women, the smaller size and lifted position of the breast after a breast reduction surgery helps to alleviate the symptoms that prompted them to pursue surgery in the first place. These changes are noticeable immediately after surgery.
Scars are inevitable in breast reduction surgery, but Dr. Rodriguez strives to make them as minimally noticeable as possible. In addition, scar therapy using a silicone product, such as silicone sheets or silicone gel, is recommended to optimize the appearance of the scars. Women that have breast reduction surgery with Dr. Rodriguez almost always say the scars are “worth it” and often say they wish they would have had this surgery sooner in life!
