Hair loss and hair thinning are extremely common in both men and women. To help create natural hair growth in the areas of hair loss or thinning, hair transplant surgery can be performed. Hair at the back of the scalp is naturally more robust than the hair at the top and front of the scalp, especially in men. Typically, hair follicles at the back of the scalp continue to grow over time and are not as susceptible to hormone changes. Hair follicles in this area are usually chosen as the donor site, where hair follicles are taken from (or “harvested”) to be transplanted (or “grafted”) elsewhere. This process is called Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).How is Hair Restorationperformed?
Hair Restoration using the NeoGraft™ device can be done quite comfortably under local anesthesia. The NeoGraft™ device is used to perform FUE by creating a tiny puncture around a single follicle. The follicle is then removed using gentle suction and stored until it is time for it to be grafted. The NeoGraft™ device allows for FUE to be performed in a consistent and efficient manner while minimizing the amount of trauma or damage to the follicle itself.
After the follicles are harvested, tiny slits in the scalp are made in the area where additional hair growth is desired. Care is taken to place these recipient sites in a pattern and at an angle that looks natural. The hair follicles are then individually and carefully inserted into these sites, using magnifying glasses to make the process as precise as possible.

After Hair Restoration with NeoGraft™, you should sleep in a position so that your head is elevated and no pressure is applied to the area with the new grafts. Typically, there is very little pain after the surgery. Tiny scabs will form over the donor site on the scalp but will heal quickly, within a few days. You should not wash the scalp for 24 hours after surgery. Most patients can return to work about 5-7 days after the surgery, but exercise should not be resumed until 2-3 weeks after surgery.
Aside from the hair shaft itself, there are many components of the hair follicle. The critical part of the follicle is the bulb, which is beneath the skin surface. When hair grows, it originates from the bulb. When hair follicles are transplanted, the bulb has to “take root” and develop a blood supply in order to survive and go on to grow more hair. During that process, it is normal and expected for the shafts of hair to fall out, around 2-3 weeks after the surgery. This is called “shedding” and it does not mean that anything is wrong. In the vast majority of cases, the follicle will survive the transplantation and will start new hair growth in about 3-4 months.

The NeoGraft™ technique offers several advantages over other hair restoration techniques. With Neograft™, there is typically no significant scarring, since the follicles are harvested individually with tiny puncture incisions. For this reason, there is no long straight scar at the donor site, as is the case with the “strip” method, which requires cutting out a strip of the scalp skin for follicle harvest.
The new hair will start to grow about 3-4 months after surgery, but full growth may take 12 months or so. Depending on the severity of hair loss or thinning and your desired results, more than one session of Hair Restoration with NeoGraft™ may be required. Each Hair Restoration case is unique. At your consultation, Dr. Rodriguez will provide customized advice, give you realistic expectations, and create a treatment plan that is best for you.
